Jayhawk Journalists bring home national and regional awards and spread out across the globe for internship

Fall 2017 Edition

J-School students Maria Ernst and Jack Graham finished in the top three in a sales simulation competition earlier this month and won cash prizes. The competition, sponsored by VMware, was open to all KU undergraduates and was hosted by the Professional Selling Program at the KU School of Business. Students had to submit a 200-word response to the prompt, "Why I am a good entrant for the VMware Sales Simulation Competition." Selected participants then received a mini-case study for the competition, which was held the week of Nov. 13.

Christian Hardy, Amie Just (j'17), Danya Issawi and Brandon Cotter were finalists in the College Media Association Pinnacle Awards contest. The University Daily Kansan also was a finalist in best social media presence.

Jackson Kurtz wrapped up his internship at CBS News as part of the winning news intern team. His team's segment, "Frozen Melting Pot," aired on CBSN. Watch Kurtz and the winning story below.

Conner Mitchell, University Daily Kansan editor-in-chief, and Darby VanHoutan, Kansan news editor, participated in a webinar hosted by the Student Press Law Center on Dec. 5. They discussed Kansan reporting on sexual misconduct. Watch the webinar here.

Roseann Pluretti, J-School Ph.D. student, was nominated to emcee the first interdisciplinary Red Hot Graduate Research event of the semester on Sept. 22. Red Hot Graduate Research is intended to bring together graduate researchers from all disciplines.

JD-Ph.D. student Harrison Rosenthal delivered the 2017 Convocation Address to his high school alma mater, The Barstow School, in Kansas City, Missouri. He encouraged students to identify and practice their core personal values before leaving high school to maximize happiness in college. The Kansan ad staff was named a finalist for the College Media Association 2016-17 Pinnacle Awards in three categories: Best Ad Supplement/Special Section, Best Display Ad and Best Multimedia Campaign. also was named one of three finalists in the Pinnacle Awards online category for four-year college website of the year.

Caitlin Ungerer received the Tom Murphy Fellowship to begin her career at Octagon Sports Marketing. Victoria Baldwin, 2014 J-School graduate, was one of her supervisors.
